I did finally get around to watching the Playboy Club. It wasn't, in my opinion, anywhere near as bad as some of the other stuff on US terrestrial television. I did find the girl power stuff in the show a bit overdone.
I believe you're far too generous to the show. What is sad is that it actually had potential to be a great canvas for powerful storylines, yet they did what they did. It got me reading the great Gloria Steinmen's essay, though. That's a plus.
They had a kind of Gloria Steinem character in what turned out to be the last episode. They also introduced the Mattachine Society into the picture in what turns out to have been the last episode. The last episode, unfortunately, leaves the Playboy bunny and the mob subplot hanging. You have to love US TV where commodity aestheticism rules.
I haven't got that far. From what I've seen, I am doubtful they would have treated feminism right. I am impresses the introduced the Mattachine Society though. I don't think I've ever seen that on TV, in fiction anyway. Cool.
